Holy Cross Harvest Food Drive through Feb. 15

Canned food, Food Bank

The Holy Cross Harvest Food Drive runs through Friday, Feb. 15. This joint drive will be held on the campuses of Notre Dame, St. Mary’s and Holy Cross Colleges and will benefit the Food Bank of Northern Indiana and the United Way food pantry coalition People Gotta Eat.

The emphasis is on monetary donations, although the drive will accept non-perishable food items as well. The Food Bank can turn every dollar donated into approximately eight meals, and all monetary donations to People Gotta Eat will be matched dollar for dollar with a grant from United Way of Indiana. For more information on the organizations, or to donate, go to the Holy Cross Harvest website. The website also includes a list of department and building representatives who will collect donations of check or cash, and a list of barrel locations for donations of food.

To visualize the need in our area, in 2011 the Food Bank distributed 60 pounds of food for every seat in Notre Dame’s football stadium. This amount was double what they distributed in 2010 and the need is just as great today.

“With members of our community struggling for the basic food necessities, we have the responsibility to respond. Let’s take this opportunity to share our blessings with those in need.”
-President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.
