College of Science Dean Greg Crawford and his wife Renate got the first view of their uphill challenge—the Appalachian Mountains—when they rode into Lynchburg from Richmond after a stop-off at Appomattox Court House.
The couple is bicycling from Boston to Dallas to raise awareness and money for the fight against Niemann-Pick Type C.
“At the end of the day, the mountains came into view,” Greg said. “I am happy they are still two days away. Peter mentioned that if I didn’t want to go up and over them, he could reroute us via Florida.”
Peter Doran of Destination Cycling is accompanying the riders. Already, they’ve met as researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C., as well as numerous families with NPC children whose stories and spirit inspire the riders—even over some of the highest mountains east of the Mississippi River.
